Terminal window freezes

Pressing CTRL+S in an application such as VIM in a terminal window will cause it to freeze.

This is pretty easy to do especially if you are moving between a GUI and the command line.

The window freezes becuase the XOFF or stop command has just been sent (flow control codes). To start again press CTRL+Q, which is XON or go.
